Living History Meets Inspiring
Modern Design

This gem, previously shown in 2018, blends historical preservation with modern design. The owners have undertaken a beautiful restoration and update which you will all love!

Originally built in 1888 by William George Wolf for Dr. Joseph Lalor, son of Peter Lalor of the Eureka Stockade, it served as a doctor’s residence and surgery, later as a medical practice until the 1970s. The house’s original features from this time, like salvaged brass foot pedals and the 'Surgery' leadlight window, remain as reminders to the past.

Wolf completed in the same era projects including The Grand Hotel, Portarlington, The Grand Hotel, Burnley and the Hawthorn mansion ‘’Abergeldie’’.

Since 2017, the renovations have been a work in progress for the owners. The thoughtful restoration and design decisions are a testament to the care and attention given to this magnificent residence.  Design has been overseen by March Studio, alongside Eckersley Garden Architecture for landscaping and The Domicile Group for build and interiors.

The home preserves its heritage while incorporating contemporary elements, such as a new roof, restored façade, and a sculptural steel screen. The interior merges 19th-century elegance with modern design. This includes a hand-painted mural rediscovered, the strategic use of wallpaper, the modern black Dekton benchtop and custom joinery in the kitchen, alongside the original external brick façade incorporated with a contemporary twist.

The open plan kitchen and dining area contrast with the period rooms at the front. Upstairs, there is the elegant master bedroom and other bedrooms that offer serene retreats with different personalities. The exterior features a Robinia tree that connects multiple levels at the rear including a basement rumpus room and laundry, a raised pool area and the ground and first floors.

This home seamlessly blends the past with the future, creating a unique living space. It is a home that will leave you in awe of its beauty, history, innovation and restoration.

What we love…

  • Heritage example of Victorian Italianate façade and ‘’Boom style’’ architecture.

  • Catherine Martin ‘Antique Lace’ wall paper in the hallway and ‘Hidden Monkeys’ wallpaper in the guest powder room.

  • Rear sculptural metal screen which has each piece designed and cut to fit together like a puzzle.

  • Large dining table crafted from Patagonia granite and supported by repurposed sewage pipes, offset against the building’s original brickwork and brass and gold leaf pendant lighting from Giffin Design Lighting.

  • 50,000 litre filtered rainwater tank underneath the raised pool.
